The First Year of Hung Shuan Ten Cash Coin from Yuan Shikai's short-lived Empire of China (1915–1916). The English reverse reads "First Year of Hung Shuan" and "Ten Cash." The Chinese obverse reads "洪憲元年" (Hóngxiàn Yuán Nián=Hongxian Year 1, Hongxian being Yuan Shikai's era name), "開國紀念幣" (Kāi Guó Jìniànbì=coin commemorating the establishment of the state), "湖南" (Húnán=Hunan (province)), and 當十銅元 (Dāng shí tóng yuán=value of ten copper yuan or cash)

Background

Yuan Shikai (September 16, 1859[1] – June 6, 1916) was an important Chinese general and politician famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his autocratic rule as the first President of the Republic of China, and his short-lived attempt to sustain himself as the Great Emperor of China.
