Creating Articles

Search

A search that doesn't yield results will show a "create this page" link. Use this link to create the article. Before you create an article, make sure someone hasn't already created an article with a similar title. What you name an article is important (review "Naming Articles" below) so consider your choices.

Basic editing of articles is easy. Advanced editing includes redirecting, deleting, managing, watching, protecting, citing, etc.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Enter the title of the article in the search field.
  2. Results for your search will be displayed.
  3. If the article you're looking for doesn't exist, select the "create this page" link.
  4. A blank page will be displayed with an edit window. This is your new wiki article!
  5. Begin editing the page. Preview your changes using the "Show preview" button. When you're ready, "Save page."

Brackets

Put double brackets around a word or group of words to create a link within an existing article. Once you save the page, the bracketed word will appear in red (red links indicate articles without content). Select the red link to view your new article page. What you name an article is important (review "Naming Articles" below) so consider your choices.

Direct URL Entry

Enter the URL of your new article directly in your browser. All WikiCoins article titles are displayed after the WikiCoins domain name. For example:

  • www.wikicoins.com/Classic_Head_Large_Cent

Naming Articles

When creating articles, consider the following when deciding on a title:

  1. Naming Convention: A naming convention is a SYSTEM for naming articles, or WHAT you name the article. Considerations include:
    1. Redundancy/Duplication: Before creating articles, it's best to search WikiCoins for duplicates. This will avoid confusion among other users.
    2. Pluralizations: It is best to keep article titles in the singular. For example, "Lincoln Head Penny", not "Lincoln Head Pennies".
    3. Capitalization: WikiCoins is NOT case-sensitive. This means it CAN NOT tell the difference between upper-case and lower-case titles. For example, the system cannot distinguish between "Lincoln Head Penny" and "lincoln head penny". These are considered two different articles. Keep this in mind when naming your article. If the community would like "lincoln head penny" and "Lincoln Head Penny" to be one and the same, simply redirect one to the other.
    4. Antecedents: Antecedents in article titles include the use of "the" or "a". For instance, "The Lincoln Head Penny" as opposed to "Lincoln Head Penny". Antecedents are best avoided when possible.
  2. Special Characters: Try and avoid using special characters in the title of your article. Symbols like "$", "%", "&", or quotes and commas are sometimes not internet-friendly.
  3. Disambiguation: Disambiguation is an article that can have two meanings, like "Nickel", which can be the coin or the element. If a title has more than one meaning, provide links for other users to navigate.
  4. Redirecting: Redirecting articles means "pointing" or "forwarding" one article to another. This is useful if one article is preferred rather than two. For instance, there may be little need for an article titled "Lincoln Penny" if one exists by the name "Lincoln Head Penny". Therefore, redirecting "Lincoln Penny" to "Lincoln Head Penny" automatically redirect searches and links to "Lincoln Head Penny".
  5. Moving: Moving is the same as "redirecting".
  6. Linking Once you create your article, you want people to find it. Creating links to your article does this. You can easily link other artilces to your article title.
  7. Categorizing:Be sure to add your article to appropriate categories so others can find it. Category names are up to you!
